Fire Prevention Month 2021

October is Fire Prevention Month! The focus of Fire Prevention Month is to raise awareness about fire safety. So we at Omega Security want to ensure you are as prepared for a fire as you can be. We also strive to educate you with fire safety tips, to help prevent fires.

Why is There a Fire Prevention Month?

The Great Chicago Fire, 1871 (painting)

In 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) named the second week of October Fire Prevention Week. They did this in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Did you know this year is the 150 Anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire?

Since then, Fire Prevention Month continues to raise fire safety awareness every year. It also focuses on educating communities all across the country. Fire departments, Non-profits, security companies, and other organizations work together to spread fire safety tips and safe practices. They often organize events, newsletters, and much more to accomplish this.

Fire Safety in the Kitchen

Fire Prevention Month 2021
  1. If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly. You also should remain in the home while food is cooking. And you should use a timer to remind you when food is ready.
  2. If you have a small (grease) cooking fire and decide to fight the fire…
  •  On the stovetop: Start by smothering the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Then, leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire: Make sure you turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

Fire Safety with Electric Outlets

  1. Make sure all electrical prongs fit snuggly into an electrical outlet.
  2. Inspect your electrical receptacle / outlet and if your electronic devices are falling out it’s time to replace the electrical outlet.
  3. Don’t overload any electrical outlet in the home. The total amperage used should not exceed 12AMPs. (considering the average home outlet)
  4. You shouldn’t daisy chain electrical strips, connecting multiple in a row before reaching an outlet.

Help Protect Your Whole Home

Omega Security has been educating and protecting homes and families since 1992. We urge you to educate yourselves and implement these life saving strategies in your home. We also offer the latest technologies to detect fires early so you can rest assured help will be on the way in the event of a fire.

The difference between a standard smoke detector and our Monitored Smoke Detectors is automatic communication

Many people believe non-monitored smoke alarms are sufficient protection against fire. They don’t realize that if you aren’t able to respond to a fire yourself, no one is calling for help. You may be away at work, fast asleep upstairs, or in another room. Waiting for neighbors to respond may be too late. When windows shatter, from the heat inside the home, the home is already lost. At that point the damage is already done.

Recognizing all this, Omega Security recommends a Monitored Smoke Detector. This device will alert our central station through your security system. And if a fire is detected our central station will communicate to first responders.

Smoke and CO Detectors  should be placed on every level of the home, as well as inside and outside each bedroom to keep your home and family safe.

Smoke detectors should also be replaced, if more than 10 years old.

Fire extinguishers should also be placed on every level of the home, especially in the kitchen and garage.

Having a security system that communicates with your smoke detectors throughout your home is a great first line of defense. When you have this, they work together to send for help. They also work around the clock. As a result, you and your family will have peace of mind knowing authorities will be alerted in case of emergency.
